Two rays of sunshine
Monday was Presidents' Day, a typically uneventful holiday in my 30-some-odd years, but this one was different. I woke up at the unusually early hour of 8:00 a.m. (I work at night so I sleep late), called Shelby County Humane Society to inquire about a boy kitten I had seen on their Web site the previous day. His pound name was Ren and he was all ears (literally). Reminding me of a young Miles, the orange tabby who I no longer live with, I instantly knew he was the one. My sister graciously agreed to drive down to Columbiana with me, a 30-minute trek down treacherous Highway 280. When we got down there, Ren was brought out and was even smaller than I had imagined. When I asked about a gray tabby boy kitten, there wasn't one at the pound at that time, but one of the attendants came out with a beautiful seven-month-old girl named Bertha. The minute I saw her I wanted her -- her green eyes and beautiful markings were irresistable.
An hour later I was home with two kittens who had both pooped in their cardboard carriers so immmediately it was bathtime and then the toys came out and haven't stopped being played with since. Ren's name has changed to Gus. Bertha is now known as Maddy Lou. Since she is a sassy sweet Southern girl, I couldn't resist giving her a Southern name.
Having lived in a house with adult cats for so many years, I forgot the non-stop energy of kittens and have never had two together. Watching them literally bounce off, dive bomb, trip, slap and rabbit kick each other during play has been more entertaining than any documentary on the sordid life of Anna Nicole Smith. When the tire of playing, they have love to retreat the kitty beds I bought for them or get in my lap. In some strange way it feels like I have known them for a long time. Having my head richocheted off of at 4:00 a.m. has been an adjustment, but waking up to two kittens curled up together on a blanket at the foot of my bed gives me internal happiness that I haven't felt in a long time. Stay tuned for further adventures of Gus and Maddy Lou.
