People, places and things

It's not that I don't have enough to blog about, I have too much so where do I start? Last weekend's wonderful and very meaningful weekend was followed by another one that involved beloved friends from college past in an inpromtu reunion down in Montevallo, the home of my alma mater (30 minutes south of Birmingham). One best friend just got married, the other is getting unmarried. It's weird how major life events can follow each other. I am sad and sorry for the breakup of this marriage, but again I was reminded this weekend about the beauty of our retained friendships and their power to make wonderful events like that wedding more wonderful and painful events like divorce a little easier to cope with because of the safety net we have been blessed with by maintaining our friendships over this 15 year span. In so many ways we have grown up together, seen each others children start as tiny babies and turn into teenagers, watched relationships come and go, college days end and careers take off as we turned into "real" adults. It is amazing to have a history with these people and a place like Montevallo. As much as I miss my mother and father in Montana, I will always feel like I have a family in that little town no matter how much it changes and again, I am so thankful that 15 years ago I trusted my gut and decided to forgo the big state schools and enroll at the University of Montevallo. That town has been one of the richest experiences of my life and one I will be eternally thankful for .

And that can be said about small towns as well. As a child I lived in 4 distinct places in Alabama. Snowdoun, Hope Hull, Prattville, and Montgomery. The first 2 were where the best memories are. Most neighbors treat you like family in the first two, the last 2, well....

Montgomery is a weird place. I spent some time there in high school with church events and church camp friends and we had fun because we were together, but the city as a whole has this pre-civil rights movement vibe that always made me want to get the hell out. I know I have seen the exit sign for Hope Hull. Where is that again?
