Woman accused in death scheme
The Associated Press
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - A grand jury will decide if a Gurley woman will stand trial for allegedly trying to hire a hit man to kill her neighbors to avenge her dead cat.
Alisha Grantham, 38, is charged with four counts of conspiracy to commit murder. District Judge Lynn Sherrod sent the case to the jury and set Grantham's bail Wednesday at $200,000. She was arrested May 20.
Sheriff's deputy Marcus Adams told Sherrod that Grantham tried to hire George Nayman of Gurley to kill the family next door. She suspected the family of three adults and a 13-year-old child of killing her cat.
Adams said Grantham allegedly paid Nayman several hundred dollars in May with a promise of more money to follow after he killed her neighbors.
One transaction included $15 for gas and a gas can. Grantham threatened Nayman when the murders were not carried out and he called the police. Officers notified the Alabama Bureau of Investigation, which called the Sheriff's Department.
Adams said Nayman cooperated with deputies, saying he did not think the death of a cat warranted the murder of humans.
Heather Douglas, spokesman for the district attorney's office, said Nayman has not been charged in the case.
(I like when the tragically sad headlines can take a back seat and the truly random and werid headlines can be observed and enjoyed. This brief ran in yesterday's Local News section that I laid out. Seems like Pat Robertson isn't the only one putting out hits of late. I like the potential hit man didn't go through with the job because he didn't think the death of a cat warranted the death of a family. He makes no statement about murder in any other situation being a problem for him. I also love that the woman who ordered the hit decided that the whole family should go down since she didn't know exactly who was responsible for the cat's death. Also, the transaction that included $15 for gas. Doesn't that buy just a quarter of tank and what's the can for? lighting a fire? Jay Leno -- where are you? )
